How to Prepare for Family Photos

Mar 4, 2025

Let’s be honest—getting ready for family photos can feel like a lot. Coordinating outfits, getting everyone out the door, praying the toddler skips their meltdown phase—it’s enough to make anyone break a sweat before the camera even comes out.

But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation (and a friendly, experienced photographer—you’ve got me!), your session can be easy, relaxed, and actually fun.

Whether this is your first professional photo session or your tenth, here’s my step-by-step guide to preparing for family photos that you’ll love for years to come.

1. Choose the Right Time of Day

Lighting is everything in photography. The best natural light usually happens about an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset—what we photographers call the “golden hour.” I’ll help you choose the best time for your session, based on location and your family’s schedule. (Hint: if your kids are happiest in the morning, let’s work with that!)

2. Coordinate Outfits (Without Overmatching)

The goal isn’t to match, it’s to coordinate. Choose a color palette of 2–3 complementary colors, and build outfits around that. Neutrals, earth tones, and soft pastels always photograph beautifully. Avoid bold logos or neon colors, and think about your home—what colors would look best on your walls when your portraits are displayed?

Need help deciding? I send every family a style guide with tips and inspiration to make it easy!

3. Plan Ahead and Keep It Simple

Lay out everyone’s outfits the night before. Pack snacks, wipes, hairbrushes, and anything else you might need, so you’re not scrambling the day of the shoot. Give yourself extra time—getting ready with little ones always takes longer than you think (ask me how I know!).

4. Bribe Strategically (Yes, It’s Okay!)

There is zero judgment here—if your little one needs a promise of ice cream or playground time afterward, go for it! Bring a favorite toy or small treat (smarties, puffs, mini marshmallows are great, non-messy options). Happy kids = beautiful photos.

5. Manage Expectations—and Just Have Fun

The best photos come from real connection and interaction, not stiff poses. I’ll guide you gently into natural moments—walking, cuddling, laughing. Don’t stress if someone looks away or makes a silly face. Often, those turn out to be the photos you love most.

Remember, it’s not about perfection, it’s about connection.

6. Think About Where These Photos Will Live

Before your session, start dreaming about how you’ll enjoy these portraits afterward. Do you want a large canvas over the fireplace? A gallery wall in the hallway? Knowing your end goal helps us choose the best compositions, poses, and crops during your session.

(And yes—I’ll help you design everything afterwards!)

Bonus Tip: Trust Your Photographer (That’s Me!)

I’m here to make this experience easy, relaxed, and enjoyable. From outfit advice to posing and printing, you’re not doing this alone. I’ll walk you through every step so you can focus on what really matters: loving on your people and being present in the moment.
