How to Prepare for Senior Photos

Mar 4, 2025

Senior year is a whirlwind—college apps, final games and concerts, prom planning—and somewhere in the mix comes one of the most meaningful milestones: senior portraits.

As a senior photographer serving Bennington, Omaha, and the surrounding areas, I know how important these photos are. They’re not just for the yearbook—they’re a celebration of who your senior is right now, before they step into adulthood.

Whether you’re a senior or a parent helping plan the session, here’s everything you need to know to get ready for senior photos you’ll be proud to show off on your walls, in announcements, and for generations to come.

1. Choose a Location That Reflects YOU

Do you love wide-open fields? The energy of downtown Omaha? Rustic textures? A lake or trail you’ve grown up around? Your location helps tell your story. I help each senior choose a location (or two!) that fits their vibe and works beautifully with natural light.

Want a mix of styles? We can absolutely do an urban + natural combo!

2. Plan Your Outfits with Intention

Outfits are one of the biggest ways to show off your personality. Here’s how to make it easy:

• Bring 2–3 outfits: A casual look, something dressier, and one that feels uniquely you (band tee, sports jersey, prom dress—go for it!)

• Think timeless: Trends are fun, but classic pieces age better.

• Keep it simple: Avoid loud patterns, neon colors, or big logos.

• Don’t forget the details: Shoes, jewelry, and grooming matter.

3. Hair + Makeup Tips

Natural makeup photographs best, but a little polish can go a long way in enhancing features on camera. Whether you do your own or hire a pro:

• Avoid SPF-heavy products (they can cause shine)

• Keep shine under control with blotting papers or powder

• Plan haircuts 1–2 weeks before, not the night before

• Boys: don’t forget to trim beards or facial hair neatly

4. Bring Meaningful Items

Props don’t have to be cheesy—they can be personal. A guitar, skateboard, sports gear, dance shoes, book, letterman jacket, or car—these details help capture your story and passions.

5. Get Comfortable and Have Fun

The best senior portraits come when you’re relaxed and being yourself. I’ll guide you through posing, but the real magic happens when you’re laughing, moving, and just being you. You don’t have to be a model—I’ve got you!

6. Think About the End Goal

Are you picturing a statement wall portrait at home? Graduation announcements? A framed print for Grandma? Let’s plan your session with the final product in mind. As part of your experience, I help every family design custom wall art and heirloom keepsakes that make your photos even more meaningful.

Let’s Make It Official!

Senior year only happens once—make sure your portraits reflect everything that makes you special. If you’re ready to start planning your senior session in the Bennington or Omaha area, I’d love to connect and create something unforgettable.
